They will be cheaper, easier to use and a quality chromatic tuner will be accurate enough to make your guitar sound in tune. Which clip-on guitar tuner is right for your needs depends on a number of factors, but we’d say that if you are a beginner, and likely to be playing a beginner’s guitar, you might be better off using a chromatic tuner. If they can be a little bit fiddly to operate at first - with the tuner displaying a spinning circle of the reference note and the note that you’ve picked, and you’ve got to tune very carefully until the display registers the correct pitch - the accuracy is incredible. This is a great option when time is of the essence, such as during a gig, or a recording session where the clock is ticking.įinally, you’ve got the strobe tuner, the most accurate and the most expensive of the options available. For quickly identifying tuning problems, there’s nothing better, and it’ll save you going string to string as with a chromatic tuner. These allow you to play all six strings simultaneously and will display which notes are in tune and which are not. The display might either show a needle or LED, typically showing green when you reach pitch. Here you play one note at a time and the tuner can tune to each of the 12 notes of Western music’s chromatic scale. Perhaps the most common is the chromatic tuner. There are three main types of guitar tuner and each one operates a little differently. (Image credit: Future) Which clip-on guitar tuner is right for me? While most clip-ons should be okay for all finishes, it’s always best to check it is suitable for your guitar’s finish before taking the plunge. Now, a quick word of caution if you own a vintage acoustic or a very high-end instrument with a delicate nitrocellulose lacquer finish: some manufacturers, such as Snark, recommend that you don’t use them with fine finishes. And if everyone is using the same tuner, then you’re all tuning to the same standard and your jam sessions will be even more harmonious. Share it with your bandmates if you have a ukulele or bass guitar player in your ranks, it will tune them up, too. You can keep it in your case or in some cases your pocket. Using a clip-on guitar tuner takes out another variable in your signal chain you won’t need another patch cable, it’s less cable to go through, and if you’ve got a long and complicated signal chain there’s fewer worries about high-end roll-off or other neurotic considerations that keep guitarists awake at night.Īnother practical consideration, and we’re definitely not cork-sniffing here, is that the clip-on guitar tuner is portable, typically taking a lithium-ion battery. There are other advantages besides pedalboard space. The clip-on tuner could make that a reality. Removing the tuner would free up some valuable real estate for, ooh, an analog delay pedal, for example. Of course, you could stay in tune with a pedal tuner, or with a fancy rack-mounted unit like the Korg Pitchblack Pro, but let’s imagine your pedalboard is already overcrowded as it is. Some acoustic-electric guitars will have an onboard tuner in their pickup and preamp system, but otherwise a clip-on is your best bet.įor electric guitar players it is a little more complicated. For acoustic guitar players, it’s a no-brainer. There’s no question that a tuner is an essential tool for 99% of guitarists out there. And besides, your tuner will help you make adjustments to your guitar’s intonation – so it can be in tune at all – and facilitate alternate tunings if that’s your bag. In the past, we might have tuned by ear to a tuning fork or reference pitch, and that was more or less good enough for rock’n’roll, but this approach takes training of the ear to be anywhere near accurate. That’s easy – because you are not a sadist and you wish to keep your bandmates and audience sane! There’s nothing worse than an out-of-tune guitar, or indeed the sound of a guitar tuning up.

Please note clay cannot be softened once it has been baked, or if it has been left out and has become hard and crumbly on its own. You can also buy a special clay softener to add to very stiff clay. You can sit it under a low-wattage lightbulb for a few minutes, or simply hold the clay in your hands to warm it up before rolling. Use a separate oven thermometer to check the temperature of your oven, as many ovens run hotter than they indicate.Ī little heat is a great way to soften your clay prior to conditioning. Each type of Sculpey clay will have its own recommended baking temperature and time, so make sure to check the packaging for these details. Make sure to store in a clay-compatible container, made of a material like polypropylene plastic.īake your Sculpey clay in a conventional oven with a fan if possible, on a metal, oven-proof glass tray or a dedicated clay-baking surface. It can be stored in the fridge or freezer without any negative effects - in fact, this may be preferable if you live in a home that gets very hot, as it may partially cure in high temperatures. Sculpey clay should be stored in a cool and dry place out of sunlight. Sculpey is also non-toxic and safe to use for all ages, although it should not be ingested or used outside of the manufacturer's instructions. Because it can be baked in a regular oven it's a very accessible form of clay modelling, as you don't need access to a kiln to use it. Sculpey is now loved by artists and crafters for its ease of use, making it ideal for making jewellery, accessories, models and home decor. But later on, the lab director was playing around with the compound and found it was easy to shape and could be baked at low temperatures into hard and durable clay. The Sculpey brand was founded in 1967 by the American brand Polyform, with the intent for it to be a thermal transfer compound… which it failed at. Chargeable via USB-C, it will last up to 40 hours playing sleep sounds or up to 20 hours if you’re using it as a speaker. It also doubles as a Bluetooth speaker if you’d prefer to nod off to your favorite audiobook. However, the loop isn’t discernible so you won’t be distracted by it. This tiny-but-mighty machine offers 11 digital sounds, including fan noises, white noise and rainfall sounds, which play on a loop. The only problem is that it’s so small, you might lose it in your bag! The LectroFan Micro2 white noise machine is only 2 inches tall, so it’s the perfect companion for your travels. Good things really do come in small packages. It doesn’t have auto-off timers, and the buttons are small. Product Details: Dimensions: 5.1 x 9 x 7.9 inches | Sound options: 15 | Timer: Yes | Power: Plug-in It’s not a small or compact machine, but we think it looks pretty smart with its inviting glow and sculptured, curved shape. Unless you have a regular routine and like to stick to the same timings and sleep sound, it may be frustrating to continually navigate the many possible settings. However, with all those features, including a radio, a low-blue light, tap-control snooze, sundown/sunrise light, and more, comes a lot of settings to adjust. In fact, the white noise machine aspect is just one feature of many. The Lumie Bodyclock comes with a lot of additional functionality. While the speaker delivers good quality sound, we would expect it to be a little clearer for the price tag. You can listen to your preferred sound for 15 to 90 minutes on a timer. With a range of 15 sleep and wake sounds, including blackbirds, thunderstorms, tree frogs, plus your standard white noise, you should definitely be able to find something that works for you. The only thing it can’t do is put the kids to bed. This clever device can manage your entire evening and morning routine, which you would expect for the money. If you're looking to splurge, we think the Lumie Bodyclock Shine 300 is worth the cost. It’s very complicated and fiddly to set up and we would like the speaker to be higher quality for the money. Product Details: Dimensions: 10 x 2.25 x 7.5 inches | Sound options: Six | Timer: Yes | Power: Battery However, the volume is controllable, and it does have a timer for 15, 30, or 60 minutes, or you can leave it on all night. While the speaker does a pretty good job of covering noise overall, and each sound is distinct, you won’t find the same sound quality as a more expensive machine. The SoundSpa only has six sound options: white noise, thunder, summer night, ocean, brook, and rain. While it’s not the prettiest machine out there, we’re willing to sacrifice some style for the affordable price. It can also run off electricity or four AA batteries, which, when coupled with its lightweight design and small size, makes it a good choice for travelers. This compact machine is super easy to use, with no complicated menus or settings, which is one of its big plus points. If you’re looking for a good night’s sleep on a budget, you can’t go wrong with the HoMedics SoundSpa. Product Details: Dimensions: 4.7 x 4.7 x 3.3 inches | Sound options: 22 | Timer: Yes | Power: Plug-in You can power the LectroFan EVO via USB or the included A/C adaptor, but it doesn’t have an internal battery, so it does need to be plugged in. It certainly won’t look out of place on your bedside table. It’s compact enough to travel everywhere with you, and as white noise machines go, it looks pretty good, too. It also comes with an optional timer you can set between one to eight hours, or play continuously, plus a 3.5mm connector for headphones if your partner isn’t quite as keen on white noise as you are. The speaker produces a clear and crisp sound, and there’s a wide volume range. The device is super simple to use, and once you’ve picked your favorite type of noise, it will be saved in the settings, and the machine will auto play that sound each time you turn it on. It plays non-repeating digital noise in a range of colors: It has 10 fan sounds, 10 ambient noise sounds-including pink and brown noise-and two ocean soundscapes. While it might not be the most technologically advanced gadget on our list, it still does everything you need it to, and then some, for a very reasonable price. Our pick of the best white noise machine is the LectroFan EVO. The device isn’t battery-operated, so it’ll need to stay plugged into a power source. It's worth noting that while the Strafe Mk.2 allows macro recording, it does not have an on-the-fly recording feature or dedicated macro keys. I tried out the Strafe Mk.2 with a variety of games, and it met every challenge that came its way. The Strafe Mk.2 responded to my actions quickly and accurately, and it didn't favor any one genre over another. I built up a fearsome Terran base in StarCraft: Remastered I took down foes with a bevy of turrets as Symmetra in Overwatch I led my party to victory in Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition, and I completed a variety of quests in World of Warcraft. But with a little time and effort, you can make your own Tracer or D.Va theme, and that will work in a pinch. Razer has been experimenting with automatically assigning preprogrammed color patterns for games such as Overwatch, and it'd be nice to see a similar feature in a Corsair product. MORE: A Guide to Mechanical Keyboard Switches There's even functionality to sync up the Strafe Mk.2 with the color-sampling Corsair Void headset. Or you can just choose a static color, a rainbow wave, or - my personal favorite - a reactive typing style that shoots rainbows of color across the keyboard every time you type. If you want to take a deep dive into the CUE, you can set up interesting, dynamic-lighting profiles for all of your favorite games. It's also worth mentioning the gorgeous RGB backlighting, which lets you set up some very elaborate patterns. In that respect, it's one of the more customizable programs out there. If you want, for example, to hit multiple keys at once, create a "double-click" key or (for whatever reason) make the spacebar into an "E," the CUE will let you do it. Furthermore, you can program macros and assign them to lesser-used keys or simply reassign keys to perform any keyboard, mouse or media function. You can link each profile with whatever games or programs you choose, and you can set up lighting options for each one. Using the CUE, you can set up three onboard profiles and as many profiles stored in your computer as you'd like. MORE: Best Gaming Keyboards - Mechanical, Wireless & RGB. However, once you learn the program's (many) idiosyncrasies, you can have a ton of fun with both the lighting and the key programming. If there's one downside to the Strafe Mk.2, it's that it takes a lot of trial and error before you can make the Corsair Utility Engine do exactly what you want. The Strafe Mk.2 runs on the Corsair Utility Engine (CUE) software which, as before, is a robust and comprehensive program, but not necessarily a user-friendly one. The difference is not as stark as it may sound, especially because I am not used to typing on linear mechanical keys, but there's no denying that the process is a little slower. On, I scored 117 words per minute with 7 errors, compared to 126 words per minute with 6 errors on my usual Logitech G613 keyboard. Of course, linear keys do have their downsides compared to tactile ones. These people had endured and worked together to try and rebuild their shattered world, and to progress from there. You could see it on the faces of children as they watched jugglers and shadow puppet artists, and in the songs of workers as they sat down for a round of vodka after another day of hard-earned survival. It was a depressing, squalid sight, but the people were happy to have a home. The first was an impoverished hub full of shanty homes carved into recesses lining the walls, containing both humans and swine for sustenance. My session was book-ended with two Metro stations. They ape real-world groups such as the Nazis, communist parties and more, each bearing conflicting opinions on social tenets as far and as wide as gender equality, class and control. Sure, you can draw parallels between Last Light and Metro 2033 - the station town hubs are still there for example, and are brimming with human stories - but the impact on your senses is tangible, lingering.Īs I mentioned in my last hands-on preview, the world of Metro: Last Light is suffering an intense civil war that rages between various factions. He's not wrong, this is a very different beast to any game I've played this generation from a story-telling perspective. When you play through Metro: Last Light, it's not your regular game story." "When I was writing the book, I just understood that maybe the story I had in my mind was too big and complicated - and too adult actually, for a shooter game. "Then I realised that the story was so big - it's much bigger than your usual shooter would contain - and right now I've got a plot and part of the story written for a book called Metro 2035, which will include the story of Metro: Last Light but will be much bigger than that. So I decided to create a separate story for the game, and I started writing a plot, then I wrote the dialogue - so I'm responsible for both the ideology, the plot and everything. I have a book called Metro 2034, but it's not very suitable a story for a shooter. "Last Light was different else because when they decide to go for a sequel. "The first game Metro 2033 was literally based on my novel Metro 2033," Glukhovsky told me. I managed to corner him for a brief chat during my hands-on time with the game, just to try and get a handle on the various themes at play during 4A Games' shooter. This is a commendable achievement, and it comes from the mind of one man - author of the Metro series of novels - Dimitry Glukhovsky. It speaks to many people, with a sliding scale of emotions and messages that it can't fail to resonate with everyone on at least one level. Metro: Last Light batters your senses with so many themes of varying severity, from the simple sight of loving parents caring for their child in the rusted bowels of a subway station, to seeing live traitors being hurled into a blazing furnace for acts of insolence. If we can't truly invest ourselves in the world of a game then can we really say we give a damn about what's happening to it, or to the plot's leading players? Personally, no, but then again reading and writing are personal, powerful hobbies, and each bears a different impact on the next player. Moments that should deliver an emotional sucker punch can feel cheesy or forced, while sentiment is regularly drowned in a sea of bombast, made-to-order characters and the deafening sound of ceaseless gunfire. It's a rare thing, given how - frankly - s**t game stories can be. Within that session I was bombarded with more themes, ideologies and graphic, genuinely harrowing scenes that most games deliver in their entire running time. Last month I was lucky enough to play three hours of Metro: Last Light. We've got a list of Metro: Last Light achievements here, but beware of spoilers. I recently played three hours of the game at a preview event. It sees the Metro network locked in a vicious civil war. Metro: Last Light was written by Glukhovsky and the plot is canon, informing elements of his next book Metro 2035. It has enjoyed over three million readers to-date. VG247's Dave Cook speaks with author of the Metro games and novels Dimitry Glukhovsky about penning his dark, frequently shocking tale.īorn in 1979, Glukhovsky started writing Metro 2033 at the age of 18 and self-published it on his own website in 2002. Metro: Last Light is going to raise the bar for writing in games. The controller advised the pilot to maintain 3,200 feet until established on the approach, and that the airplane was cleared for the approach. One pilot reported that he required a significant amount of engine power to maintain airspeed and had a hard landing due to ice accumulation on his airplane.Īs the accident airplane approached CAK, the local air traffic controller (ATC) issued the pilot a vector to the instrument landing system (ILS) localizer course about two miles from the runway’s ILS outer marker. Three of the pilots reported a rapid accumulation of between 1 and 2 inches of ice within a 15-minute period prior to and after the accident. The reports also indicated freezing rain. General aviation pilots operating into and out of CAK surrounding the time of the accident all reported icing conditions, with most of the icing occurring between 3,000 to 3,500 feet. Meteorological analysis showed a high likelihood of encountering supercooled large droplet (SLD) icing in the area.
